Additional SEND Provision
Sunshine Room and Rainbow Room SEND Provisions at Sutton Park Primary School
At Sutton Park Primary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing, inclusive, and aspirational learning environment for all pupils. Our Sunshine Room and Rainbow Room are specialist in-house, SEND provisions designed to support pupils with higher SEN needs.
These provisions are specifically for children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or are currently on the EHC assessment pathway, with the primary identified need being social, communication and interaction difficulties, often alongside significant learning challenges.
The Rainbow Room supports children in the Early Years Foundation Stage, offering a calm, nurturing, and predictable environment that is highly visual and structured. This safe space enables young learners to build the foundations of communication, engagement, and early learning. The Sunshine Room supports children in Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2, continuing this personalised and structured approach to ensure continuity and progression in their development.
Both rooms operate as part of our alternative provision within the mainstream setting. Our approach is based on blended learning, which provides access to high-quality teaching, personalised timetables, and individualised support tailored to each child’s unique needs, as outlined in their EHCP. Pupils are also assigned to a mainstream class, which allows for flexible integration with peers of the same age when appropriate. This access supports academic, social, and emotional development, and promotes inclusion, relationships, and a sense of belonging.
At the core of our provision is a commitment to individualised planning, with EHCP documentation driving all teaching, learning, and target-setting. Lessons are designed with clear, structured sequences to meet each child's specific developmental and educational goals. Communication development, social awareness, and essential life skills are prioritised to help each pupil become as independent and confident as possible.
We work in close partnership with families, recognising that strong, consistent communication is vital—especially as many of our pupils are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication. Parents and carers are key partners in shaping provision, celebrating progress, and planning next steps.
As an integral part of Sutton Park Primary School, the Sunshine and Rainbow Rooms embody our inclusive ethos. All pupils, families, and staff are respected as valued members of our community. Our goal is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially—and to become the very best they can be.
